Autumn Term 1 2015

Recycling Officers attend their Annual Conference

The girls had a great time at the Conference when they looked at different ways to recycle, reduce and reuse. They were shown what you can compost too. They were shown a video that explained everything about the recycling plant and how the waste from our silver bins at home are sorted. They also fun playing games plus they had a cup of tea.  This was all before the moment they had been waiting for all day - their backpack with all its recycled goodies in it.

The Romans invade Year 4!

Year 4 experienced plenty of excitement when the Romans came for a day to our school. They spent the day learning about life as a Roman; from acting out a Roman banquet to making a bulla (an amulet worn like a locket) and learning how to march as a Centurion.

Year 1 Geography Field Trip

As part of their Geography topic this half term the Year 1 class have been studying the local area. Year 1 walked into the village to record the many different uses of buildings!!   They especially liked Mr Simms!!

Year 5 will never get lost!!  If they have an iPad!!

Year 5 really enjoyed working out directions from a point in the playground to a finishing point using the compass directions on the iPads and their metre sticks.  They then recorded their directions back in the class for others to follow!

Year 6 Bikeability

Year 6 are enjoying two days of Bikeability Level 2 training. They are learning how to ride bikes safely on the roads around Alderley Edge. Today on the playground and day 2 on the roads.  Keep your eyes out for us and please drive carefully!

Toilet Refurbishment

Last fix is now in process and work is over a week ahead of schedule.

The children's, staff and accessible toilets will all be open after the October holiday.

Wilmslow Schools - Football League

The football team started so well with a 5 - 0 win over St Anne's but then went on to lose their next two games but despite this the team have moved up one place in the league.

The team lost 2 - 1 to St Benedict's School but it was widely considered by many spectators and coaches alike that this was the best game of the evening and that Alderley Edge deserved a point out of the game.

Year 1 Fire Officers

Year 1 have been writing questions in Literacy so they thought and wrote their own questions to ask firemen. They were lucky to have 3 firemen call into school today to talk to Year 1 and answer their questions - ALL of their questions!    They even saw the fire engine and heard the siren too!!!

Year 3 Geography Trip

Year 3 had a lovely morning walking along the River Bollin at The Carrs.  They were learning about river features and how the flow of the water changes. They enjoyed a game of pooh sticks on the bridge which showed where the river was flowing the fastest!  They were then able to map out the river back in class.

Beech Hall Netball Tournament

The team usually play High 5 netball so the 7 a side rules were quite a step up and despite their best efforts the team failed to secure a win.  The team will continue to train hard and hopefully will continue to improve over the coming weeks.  As you can see from the photos below - it certainly didn't dampen their spirits!!

MSSP Competition at Macclesfield RUFC

The team (a mixture of Y5 and 6) played some lovely running rugby but made some careless handling errors which led to a turnover ball all too often. They lost two games by one try in each game, drew a further two games and won a final game.  Despite not winning overall the team had a great afternoon and as you will see in the set of photos below.

MATCH REPORT

After last week`s tournament, the tag rugby team were looking forward to this weeks at Macclesfield Rugby Club.

The first match was against Park Royal. Although the team knocked the ball on through the first pass of the game (the rugby ball went forward through a drop) and there were a couple of bad passes and handling errors in the match, Mr Perry said they were “the best side I have seen going forward”. Sadly the game was lost 2-3.

The passing and throwing was better in the second game but there were still some errors. Wilmslow Grange beat the team 1-2.

The third game was against Gorsey Bank who told the team that they hadn`t lost a game so far! The boys and girls showed a lot of determination in that match and although they didn`t win the match they managed a draw 3-3.

The last match the team played in the tournament was against Gawsworth and although they were still fighting for a win they just didn’t get it. That game was drawn 2-2.

The team finished off the afternoon with a friendly against Mobberley …and a win!

Key Stage 2 Assembly

Key Stage 2 had a special assembly today introducing them to Judo. As you can see in the photo the children had great fun but will know have an opportunity to find out more about this sport by trying it over 6 weeks before school.

Tag Rugby World Cup

Chosen to represent Wales in the Wilmslow Schools Rugby World Cup the team represented the Welsh side very well.  Initially they played Samoa, France, Italy and South Africa where they won all their games except for one which they lost against a very strong Samoan side.  The team played for a 3rd / 4th position when we (as Wales) played England.  Sadly we lost but we had mixed emotions with England beating Wales!!

Learn about Light, Shadow and Variables in Year 6

Year 6 have been investigating light and shadows in science. We set up our own tests to find out what variables can affect the size of a shadow.

Year 6 have been evacuated!
On Friday 25th September, Year 6 escaped the classroom and were evacuated by steam train to Rawtenstall, Lancashire. The children dressed in costume and with the help of the volunteers at East Lancashire Railway, reenacted the evacuation process. They were really able to empathise with WW2 evacuees and what they would have been through. Some children were chosen by host families but all returned safely to school at the end of the day.

Great Weather - Great Science

The Year 3 were so pleased that the sun has been shining this week as it allowed them to get outside and do some great science investigation work.  Year 3 have been using the outdoors and sun to investigate how the spin of the earth creates shadows and how they change through the day!
