One of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the ability to read. We believe that reading should be an enjoyable activity.

In the early years and key stage one there is great emphasis on the teaching of reading using a structured phonics programme known as Read, Write, Inc. Children are taught to read using phonetically decodable books and given access to a wide range of other reading materials and books.

At KS2 we extend and develop each child's reading skills to enable them to be confident, independent and skilled readers.

Teachers read regularly to and with children, modelling reading and immersing all children in the rich world of language and imagination.

We aim to develop a love of reading and therefore encourage our children to take books home and share them with family members. Children need to be able to read with understanding, for pleasure and for information. The children’s reading is structured in KS1 and pupils are helped and guided towards suitable reading material. As the pupils go through the school, they are given more responsibility for this choice in reading.
